I grew up with some classical training as a violist in a youth symphony. But by the time I was in high school in the 80's I was terribly bored with classical music. Punk and industrial music had my ears. While a college radio DJ in upstate NY I discovered Steve Reich. This was one of the first Reich pieces I had ever heard and it changed the way i thought about orchestral music. Reich was sampling and looping years before such techniques were used in hip-hop.
This is a 1976 live recording of "Music for 18 Musicians," recorded at Town Hall, New York City in 1976. It is one of Reich's most famous compositions and re-samples appear in several chillout tracks that we play.
